| Information about Road Trip East of Malaga | A road trip East of Malaga
Situated on Spain`s Mediterranean southern coast in the Andalusia region, Malaga is renowned for its beautiful beaches and excellent climate. The city lies on the Costa del Sol and enjoys the warmest winters in Europe, perhaps not surprising when one considers its proximity to Africa. With around 300 days of sunshine each year, there is no such thing as a bad time to visit the region. There`s plenty to keep you occupied in the cosmopolitan city of Malaga and the birthplace of Picasso unsurprisingly offers much to amuse culture lovers.
Of course to really get to know an area it is important to explore as widely as possible and for those that take the time to get off the beaten track, Malaga and the surrounding region offers great rewards. To make the most of your visit to this incredible region, it`s worth renting a car and taking a road trip to discover more about the people and the culture of this area. After spending a few days in Malaga, head eastwards along the Mediterranean coast toward Rincon de la Victoria, a lovely seaside town that is a popular summer holiday destination for Spaniards. Rincon has expanded in recent years so it is well suited to the needs of visitors with a good choice of restaurants, bars and shops to choose from.
Away from the beaches there is plenty to keep you occupied in Rincon, including the Casa Fuerte, a fort dating back to the reign of Carlos III as a defence against pirate attacks. No visit to the town is complete without a visit to the nearby Treasure Cave ("la Cueva del Tesoro") just a short drive from town. One of the best times to visit Rincon is during its annual fiesta in July.
Further along the coast, Velez Malaga is a lovely place to visit. Located in the heart of some of Spain`s most productive land, Velez is a fantastic spot in which to sample the famous Malaga wines made from the local muscatel grapes and is also a centre for olive pressing and ceramics. The town has a long and fascinating history having been an important centre during Roman times, under Moorish rule and finally conquered in the name of the Christians in the mid 15th century. Another worthwhile stop along the coast is the delightful whitewashed town of Torrox, which claims to have the best climate in Europe. With the perfect combination of mountains and beaches the scenery is quite breathtaking and the town remains largely untouched by development. Torrox is a great base for hiking in the nearby mountains.
Driving further eastwards you will soon come to the lovely town of Nerja, famous for its white powdery beaches and sparkling water. The dramatic Sierra Almijara range rises above the town`s eastern edge providing a stunning view from almost anywhere in town. The highlight of any visit to Nerja is the incredible Balcón de Europa (Balcony of Europe) an incredible cliffside promenade offering sweeping panoramic views of the ocean below. If time permits, it is well worth travelling on as far as Almuñecar, east of Nerja. The town is packed with history and culture and a walk around the streets gives a fascinating insight into the various influences on the town`s development. Almuñecar is a must for nature lovers and anyone that enjoys the great outdoors and in winter proximity to the ski resort of Sierra Nevada makes it a popular spot.
Getting to Malaga is easy; you can fly directly in and out of Malaga and begin your explorations there, or you might prefer to go for an `open jaw` trip, which involves flying into one airport and out of another. The road network throughout this region is excellent and easy to navigate. If you have a little longer, a fabulous road trip involves arriving into Faro airport and spending a week or two driving along the coast to Malaga and beyond, stopping whenever and wherever you fancy along the way. Look into car hire Faro Airport prior to departure and you can begin your adventure as soon as you get off the plane.
